Q. Do I need to take a test?
A. Since January 1st 1997 anyone passing a driving test must take a separate category B+E driving test if they tow in excess of 750Kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass). In our experience this encompasses virtually every trailer on a farm, as well as caravans, horseboxes, boats and many other trailers. This means many people under the age of 28 are likely to need to take the test.
Q.How long is the test and how much does it cost?
A.The B+E test is approximately 1 1/2 hours long and the Driving Standards Agency fee is currently £115 (accurate as of April 1st 2009)
Q.Where can I take the test?
A.There are approved DSA test centres throughout the UK. RDT generally recommends that customers take their test at the Pontypool LGV Test Centre.
Q.How long will it take me to reach test standard?
A. Obviously every individual is different. If you can already reverse competently and your driving is of a reasonable standard 1 ½ days training with a test at the end of the second day may suffice – however an assessment prior to starting your course will better determine this.
Q.What documents do I need?
A. There is no theory element to the B+E test so a current full driving license (counterpart and photopart) is needed. If you do not have a photographic license a passport will be needed to accompany your old style license.
Q.Can I practice towing – outside of lessons?
A. Yes. So long as your accompanying driver has B+E entitlement, is over 21 and passed their test more than three years ago. You must display ' L' plates on the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer.
Q.Why use Raglan Driver Training?
A. Over the past seven years RDT has helped over seven hundred customers pass both the standard driving test and the B+E test. RDT uses DSA approved driving instructors who are also PassPlus registered. We are also members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. With a background in the agricultural industry RDT has a huge experience of working with all sorts of towed vehicles from agricultural machinery to horse boxes, boat trailers and Commercial trailers.
